Fractional size bass strings are proportionally
smaller than regular sized strings. Each manufacturer
formulates fractional strings to the specific scale length for each size bass.
Mfg's also control string tension and mass to make string diameter proportional
to the overall length. This is important for several reasons, most notably the
amount of tension transferred to the top. Over tensioning the top does not increase
the life-span of either the string or the instrument. Also, smaller scale instruments
are often chosen because they are easier to play for a variety of bass players...
