Pöllmann Alexandria
Violin form

By now the Alexandria Model from Pollmann is an established form. It has been so popular that some buyers have waited many months for the next one to arrive. As of this writing, however, a particularly beautiful example is in our stock. When we last went to Germany we had the opportunity to select among several Pollmann basses that were available. We searched for both sound potential and beauty. The upper bout is small enough to accommodate upper register repertoir or solo work without fatigue, yet the lower bout is large enough to produce strong orchestra fundamentals. And the string length is more than comfortable even for smaller hands. Bravo to Pöllmann for finding such a wonderful balance of the essential elements. If you're attracted to the shape and dimensions, you will also be very pleased with the sound.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 18 3/4"
  • Lower bout width: 29"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/2"
  • Playing string length: 41 1/4"
E.M. Pöllmann
“Emperor 4-String,” Mittenwald, 2006

Sold! No longer available.

The Emperor is a full size bass with a playable string length. As a result of Pöllmann's meticulous hand graduation of the top and back, the middle and high frequency response of this instrument remains strong and even; a claim that few big basses can make. But it's the power of the lower register that makes a larger instrument like this worth playing. This is a bass that can truly anchor a section. Beautiful wood and craftsmanship, as always.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 21 1/2"
  • Middle bout width: 13 1/2"
  • Lower bout width: 29 1/2"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/8"
  • Playing string length: 41 1/2"
E.M. Pöllmann (BASTOCK164)
“Rivolta,” Mittenwald, 2006

Sold! No longer available.

This bass is modeled after instruments by Giacomo Rivolta. This instrument has great depth in spite of it modest, manageable proportions. The unusual corners have features of both gamba and violin. The top and back have small guide pegs in the blocks, and the back is unpurfled; common traits of older Italian instruments. This bass is a joy to hear and play.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 19"
  • Middle bout width: 13 1/2"
  • Lower bout width: 25"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9"
  • Playing string length: 40 3/4"
E.M. Pöllmann (BASTOCK163)
“Guarneri,” Mittenwald, 2006

Sold! No longer available.

The Guarneri is another amazing instrument from the Pöllmann line. With Rich Italian Styling, wider shoulders, very dark finish and an amazing tone, this bass is truly in a class by itself. The spruce for the top of this bass was recovered from the floor of a 160 year old church near the Pöllmann workshop. This particular instrument was hand picked by the owners of Lemur Music in Germany.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 19"
  • Middle bout width: 15"
  • Lower bout width: 27"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 8 1/2"
  • Playing string length: 41"
E.M. Pöllmann (BASTOCK159)
“Emperor 5-String,” Mittenwald, 2006

Sold! No longer available.

The dimensions of this instrument make it exceptionally versatile. Conservatory students who want to have five strings will find the playable dimensions and cello-like upper register more than satisfactory for intensive repertoire development. The low register is also even throughout - all the way down to the low B - making this bass an orchestra section anchor. Articulation, voice, strength, and playability - this bass has it all.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 21"
  • Middle bout width: 15 1/2"
  • Lower bout width: 29 1/4"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/4"
  • Playing string length: 42"
Pöllmann
4 String Emperor Bass made in 1978

Sold! No longer available.

This is a bass with some history. It was originally made as a five string bass in 1978. At some later point, the 5th string was replaced with an extension to achieve the low notes. In this configuration, the instrument was used in the Tononto Symphony for several years. When we received the bass, we opted to remove the extension and set it up as a four string bass. And what a powerhouse it is! The body is large and the sound reflects the size. But the string length is very comfortable making it a great section bass or a piano trio jazz bass. Beautifully flamed wood and full ornaments.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 20 1/2"
  • Lower bout width: 28 1/2"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/4"
  • Playing string length: 41 1/4"

Pöllmann Rossi
Model 5 Bass

Sold! No longer available.

Pöllmann is simply the best. And this premier orchestra powerhouse bass proves it. Patterned after an 1847 bass by Gaetano Rossi, the tone is a balance between the one-piece poplar back, producing a massive spreading fundamental, and a very strong top plate, which yields an even, strong sound up to the top of the fingerboard. Finished with custom machines, and a spectacular Italian-style antique varnish, the Pöllmann Rossi Model bass is a sight to behold.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 20 3/4"
  • Lower bout width: 29"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/4"
  • Playing string length: 42"

VENEZIA 2005 ISB Prize Winner

Sold! No longer available.

Not only was Venezia the winner of the Gold Medal for Craftsmanship at the 2005 International Society of Bassists Convention luthiers' competition, she is our current catalog's cover girl. Aside from the obvious unusual features, like rosette and unique f-holes, notice the double purfling and custom tuning machines. Note how the subtle contour of the f-holes is integrated into the shapes of other components, such as the quasi-Tyrolian horns on the approach to the scroll and the bottoms of the outer scroll cheeks. This contour can also been seen in the shape of the end of the fingerboard and the top end of the tailpiece. Even the top edge of the nut, and the floor and ceiling of the pegbox restate this motif. This bass has a huge orchestral sound and quick, almost tender response. Venezia is a fantastic instrument, well worth it's price.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 20 1/2"
  • Middle bout width: 15 1/4"
  • Lower bout width: 27 3/4"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/4"
  • Playing string length: 41"

Pöllmann 3/4 Busseto
4 string with full ornaments

Sold! No longer available.

Lemur Music was very fortunate to be offered these matched maple backs that the Pöllmann family had been saving for decades. So naturally, we had them made into our favorite style for chamber, solo, and jazz performance, the Busseto shape with full ornaments. The amber color shows off the spectacular figure in the wood. And the combination of sloping shoulders and playable string length makes a bass that is accessible from top to bottom.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 20 1/8"
  • Lower bout width: 26 5/8"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/8"
  • Playing string length: 41"
Pöllmann Gamba
4 String Bass

Sold! No longer available.

We could not stop looking at the wood! It is a spectacular Scottish maple with deep, wide flames that dance as the light changes. And how about the shape? This mesmerizing ¾ Gamba shape has a little extra curve in the waist which provides more of a “handle” to hold when lifting the bass. But, of course, this is a musical instrument, so we must also be concerned about the sound. So far, we have set this bass up with jazz strings and found a very strong, rhythmic pizzicato that is unusually friendly to the bow. This bass is not large, but the sound is very strong with colorful midrange as is typical of Pöllmann basses.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 19 3/4"
  • Lower bout width: 26 1/4"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9 1/4"

Pöllmann Lionhead
5-String Bass

Sold! No longer available.

Made in 1999, this bass possesses a rare combination of beauty and tone. The bass was originally purchased through Lemur Music by a woman who felt that succeeding in the Hollywood movie score recording scene required more than good sound. A special premium was paid to choose the most spectacular figured maple, spruce with bear-claw grain and carve a friendly lion head with mammoth ivory teeth. Five strings were also a must because the clacking of a machine extension is not appreciated in the studio. Her decision to concentrate on family makes this (and the Prize Winner) available to you.

Pöllmann 7/8 Bussetto
Custom Left Handed Bass

Sold! No longer available.

This left-handed bass was a special order by a jazz musician in Portland. He got tired of trying to find a good bass, having it converted to LH play, and finding that the tone suffered in the process. This order was truly a success. We were able to customize dimensions as well as the color, and deliver the bass of his dreams. Here are some excerpts from the letter he wrote back to us: "It's fantastic ! I can't believe how cool it looks. It already looks lived in. It had a personality right out of the crate, and it is very inspiring. It inspires confidence to play on it, because it has no dead spots. It is amazingly even and in tune with itself all up and down the fingerboard." "This bass can take whatever you dish out, and there are no physical restrictions inherent to its construction that say, "You can't do that." The only obstacle to spontaneous creation (i.e. jazz) is ME. The bass is a willing partner in crime, an extension of my brain, and that's what you want. That it speaks with such a big articulate voice is just a huge bonus." "Anyway, this has been a great experience. Thank you so much for helping this become a reality. It's a bit daunting to lay out that much money and hope in the end you get your money's worth. I truly believe I have."

Pöllmann
Verona 7/8 Bass

Sold! No longer available.

Built in 1977, this bass was owned and played by a universty professor who taught bass performance. Even among Pöllmann basses, the depth and uniformity of the flamed maple is remarkable. The outstanding wood coupled with full ornamental carving and beautifully thin reddish varnish make this bass one that everyone notices. Tonally, this instrument has much to recommend it – the 7/8 size and the gently arched top contribute strong, even low-end response, while the choice woods have aged into a rich and complex midrange sound.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 20 1/2" or 52 cm"
  • Lower bout width: 27 1/4" or 69 cm"
  • Rib depth (inc. top & back): 8 7/16 or 21 cm"
  • Playing string length: 41 " or 104 cm"
Pöllmann Emperor Lionhead
5-String Bass

Sold! No longer available.

Finally, a truly full-size bass from Pöllmann. The Emperor bass produces a loud and rich tone throughout the range of the instrument. Compared to the Rossi, the balance of tone in this bass is brighter, with stronger midrange. Also, it is rare to see such a large bass with such beautifully flamed maple on the back and sides. Alongside the Rossi, these two instruments prove that new Pöllmann instruments are ready for the philharmonic.

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 21 5/8"
  • Lower bout width: 26 3/8"

Specifications:
  • Upper bout width: 19 1/2"

The selection of woods is uncompromised including fine, straight, and even grained spruce on the top and intensely flamed maple for the back, sides and neck. The tone is uncompromising as well. Wonderful depth and colorful midrange emanate from this beautiful and easy-to-play 3/4 size bass.

  • Lower bout width: 26"
