Double Bassists are often seen as slow or clumsy. However, bassists in Busy Bassists are different: it is about funny, bright, and quick fellows (yes, there are indeed quick bassists!), as in the movements "maniac" and "joker". Both outer movements reminds of Southern American dance music. In "lingerer" a more pensive and melancholy mood appear. Busy Bassists is written in three movements which include typical elements of jazz. Unusual is the percussion-session in the third movement: without any additional instruments there is an exciting and rhythmical fireworks.
Busy Bassists was premiered on May 17th, 1999, on the occasion of the International Week of Double Bass in Kloster Michaelstein by the "Alsterbrummer", the double bass trio of Philharmonische Staatsorchester Hamburg.
