The term 'Hybrid Bass' usually means it has a carved (or solid wood) top with a laminated-wood back & sides. Many shops sell hybrid basses as a cheaper alternative to a solid wood bass. All too often, the "carved" top has just been machined to an even thickness, which really does NOT do much to enhance tone. So, the 'cost savings' are negligible and the benefit in tone is just not there for the player.
At Lemur Music, we view the Hybrid Bass differently.
When you purchase a Hybrid Bass from Lemur, you are getting a bass that has been specifically designed to incorporate the strength of laminated wood to enhance the flat-back design. Using plywood for a flat-back solves many of the bass maker's problems associated with the flat-back bass, such as cracking and sound post damages.
Using hard, durable plywood for the back also insures the sound will be crisp, loud, and most importantly, direct. Lemur's hybrid design uses a very good quality spruce top that's been hand graduated to our specific design to produce Liberty Belle's clear, ringing mid-range, and solid fundamental on the bottom.
We feel strongly about these design decisions and want you to understand exactly what you are choosing when you purchase a hybrid bass. We use Liberty Belle for our FlyAway (removable neck) Bass as well as a 'regular' neck bass.
