Granulated Hide Glue,1/2 lb, High Strength |
Now we've done it - we found a reason that luthiers should have more than one hide glue. We found that certain glue joints require higher strength, such as the joint between fingerboard and neck. Basically, any glue joint that is intended to be permanent, rather than give way under the stress of changing humidity, is a candidate for Lemur Music's new High Strength Granulated Hide Glue. Similar to A1401, this new High Strength formula and is a high clarity glue. The open time, or gel time, is reduced. So this glue needs to used in situation where you can work quickly. But the resulting bond is stronger. A1408A is the 1/2 lb bag, and A1408B is the 2 oz bag.
Check out A1401 if you're in search of the more standard formulation, especially for gluing tops to ribs.
Please note that this glue has to be thinned more to get the same consistency. To prepare:
1). Mix 1 tsp. glue plus 4 to 6 tsp. water in a small open-mouth glass jar.
2). Wait until all the water is absorbed (1 to 2 hours).
3). Heat jar in a pan of boiling water (double boiler).
4). Use it while it's hot and get clamp pressure on the joint before the glue gels.
