In conjunction with the bass makers at Emanuel Wilfer,Lemur Music has created a custom collection of double basses designed to deliver the big full sound that both orchestra and jazz players are looking for. The series of 5 basses, Conservatory™, Upper Register™, Foundation™, Edelweiss™, and Gentleman Jazz™ can be customized for your specific playing preference.
In this generation, the bass maker at Emanuel Wilfer is Roland Wilfer. His Meister Certificate was earned at the most famous violin making school in the world in Mittenwald, Germany. His family has an impressive collection of wood garnered over three generations and is used in the making of his fine instruments.
In addition to the Wilfer Five, Lemur Music is pleased to offer a varying selection of basses from E. Wilfer as they become available during the year. Please call 800-246-2277 (US & CAN) or (949)493-8323 worldwide to learn more about these custom basses.
The Wilfer Conservatory ¾ sized Gamba form double bass is truly a German classic. We worked extensively with Wilfer to adjust the graduations and rib depth to enlarge the sound. A harder, matte-finished varnish helps focus tone, and careful adjustment of the string playing length make a bass that is easy to play and has plenty of projection. With our adroit setup, the Conservatory is a bass that can take you through a music major in college or a jazz concert on important stages.
The Edelweiss bass' fancy violin corners, antique amber color and more select woods remind us of a delicate, sweet flower. Slightly enlarged standard 3/4 dimensions in the lower bout and rib definitely strengthen the sound, while maintaining an easy-to-play string length of 41 to 41.5 inches. Edelweiss' elegant proportions have made it a favorite with soloists and smaller stature players who want a bass that plays like butter: smooth, silky, creamy, and just a little bit tart.

The Gentleman Jazz name says it all…. Smooth, refined, strong in the mid-range, powerful in the lower register. If you have dreamed of playing piano trio gigs without an amp, this could be your bass. Violin corners, antique amber color, and medium-fancy woods make for a beautiful double bass that can really move some air, and easily move your heart. Gentleman Jazz has been our most popular Wilfer Model Bass. Our set-up experts can deliver this bass to you with the action you crave. Video presentation is available on our website.

Upper Register represents the fusion of two fine ideas: a 3/4 width upper bout with a 4/4 size lower bout. What a great combination that projects a loud, full sound yet give easy access to the Upper Register. This Gamba form double bass with sloped shoulders makes a great professional jazz axe if you are an acrobatic soloist. The extra deep ribs also make it possible for Upper Register to be a great conservatory instrument for a tall person. Video presentation is available on our website. Foundation is a five-string double bass with deep fundamentals that can really anchor a section. A full-size (4/4) Gamba form double bass with a deep curve on the fingerboard and taller bridge makes room for your bow hand while giving access to the interior strings. We specify a darker matte finish and plainer grained woods to keep the price of this 5-string cannon affordable. Forget you ever heard the phrase "extension machine" when you take up this 5-string bass. Deep, ribs, tall bridge and a big, full sound- everything about this double bass is big except the length (42") and the price. Moderately flamed woods, dark color.
