Zwolf Waltzer (Twelve Waltzes) for Double Bass
Edited by Tobias, Glöckler, Dresden, 2007
Success as a soloist early in his career brought Dragonetti, double bassist at the Chapel of St. Mark's in Venice, lucrative invitations from abroad. Like many of his countrymen he chose to go to London, where he resided almost exclusively from 1794, quickly rising to the position of a virtuoso and lauded by press and public.
Dragonetti's Twelve Waltzes for solo double bass were composed in London, like the majority of his works. The pieces were intended for his own use. The exact date of composition is unknown but notes suggest they are a late work.
The uniformly virtuosic nature of the pieces, the partial use of 'remote' keys, and the number of pieces suggest they were methodically conceived as a cycle. With the Twelve Waltzes a work was created which combines musical conciseness with a wealth of tempting challenges for the soloist.
