Beautiful full-grained spruce top, maple back & sides.

We re-furbished the finish on this gorgeous old flatback when we moved her to the Berkeley Shop, so the intense, bright, golden undertones are really shining through the red-brown varnish. This Bass is a 7/8 size Gamba, Flatback, with a perfectly placed kerf, also still intact and in good repair.  It’s been played as an orchestra bass for the last 100 years, and has developed the deep, dark, robust fundamental that you need to stand out in the section.  The flatback makes for ‘up-close” access with the sloped shoulders contributing to the ease of play.  The longer C-bout affords plenty of bow arm. We have re-worked the fingerboard for a smooth touch and tuned the bass accordingly.  The overall health of the bass is quite good.  Notice the f-holes are still nice and flat.  Some rib cracks were repaired two decades ago and are stable. E.M. Pollmann "Emperor" 5-string Model in 5/4 size.  Labeled E.M.Pollmann, handmade in Mittenwald, Germany in 2000..  Beautiful full-grained spruce top, maple back & sides.  Busseto Form. Dark red-brown with trademark golden undertones in this fine finish.  Hand rubbed to perfection and carefully maintained over the past 18 years.  This bass has had only one owner and was very well loved.

This Bass is a 5-string model and has a huge lower bout at 30.”  The shoulders slope away for very reasonable access and a 42.5” SPL (yes! It’s true) makes this beast very playable indeed.  The massive amount of ‘air in the box’ delivers unprecedented projection and volume. The set up has been with the 5^th on the treble side, but we have also played it with the 5^th on the bass side.  It’s your call.  Please inquire about setup so we can have her ready to go when you arrive for a trial run.  Custom Mooradian Gig Bag included.

Oceana is a ¾ bass with a 41” string length, very playable.  The entire bass is made from a beautifully fine grained poplar stained gold and green, with a lacquered finish.  There is a rosewood fingerboard, rosewood purfling, and trim accents. The tailpiece is carved from ultra-light curly boxwood into an ocean/shell motif. A most unusual nautilus shell scroll caps the peg box. The keys are custom made from brass in the ocean motif  which also carries over to the hand cut f-holes, and specially designed bridge.  Rosewood hand holds, like the original corner less basses, are mounted in rosewood. Please click on the tile above to learn more about this bass and her maker.
