From finest texture to coarsest
texture:
- Un-bleached white is finest;
- Salt & Pepper is a mixture
of black, grey, and white so it is coarser than un-bleached white;
- Auburn (red brown) is more
coarse than salt & pepper, more similar to black;
- Black hair is uniformly more
coarse than the other colors.
How to choose a texture:
Many players experience is that coarser hair pulls a noticeably bigger volume
of tone from the string as well as eliminating some of the 'sizzle sound' that
too-fine bow hair sometimes produces. Our experience is that coarser bow hair
is stronger and holds up better when played on bass strings, which are much
larger than violin strings. Hair that is too-fine may sound 'sshhish' and break
too easily under the bass bow.
Many bowmakers use a fine, violin
bow sized hair on bass bows as their standard. In re-hair we frequently replace
too-fine white hair with salt & pepper, or our specially selected, extra
strong un-bleached white horse hair. We test the white hair carefully before
purchasing it so you can be certain your re-hair is with bass bow grade horse
hair.
